Interesting analogy Jon. You could also say that colocation is like owning a condo, managed services like renting an apartment, and cloud computing like a hotel room. Hopefully that hotel room isn't like those rooms that are rented by-the-hour. :)

I love this analogy. It takes a pretty opaque topic and really brings it down to a level that more people can relate to. I also like how it is broken down in segments along a continuum based on need. Too often I think technology is shoved forward as the newest and best without looking at how it actually will be used. Great stuff.

An emphasis on good security education for the types of mid-level IT administrators often left to fend for themselves with a firewall or IDS, or challenged to adequately evaluate security vendors, would be a good thing. Many of these administrators don't even know where to look for resources. Education is paramount. If you affect change on people's mindsets as to the value of proactive security, eventually you'll change the way people do business around security.

Absolutely agree, especially on the 3rd area you mention. The good news is there are plenty of unsolved problems in what is essentially a distributed, heterogeneous and virtualized compute, storage and networking space....there is plenty of room for hosting providers to address specific workloads/markets and survive among the walmart's of cloud computing :)

Great to see a blog from Carpathia -- it really puts a "face" on the company.

I also think you're spot-on with the trends. It will indeed be power issues and cloud/virtualization that will be the hot areas for the next period.
